Shanghai! 3 Days in...

So this is the 3rd day in China and I thought I would write a quick update as to how things have been going!

First things first I will let you know that the flight made it (of course) with only a 3 hour delay at Dubai airport, So can't complain too much although it did mean we missed the Welcome dinner. (ah well, got the leftovers sent to our room!)

After that we got stuck in straight away Monday morning with a lecture on Shanghai and its archetectural and general history. A truly fascinating talk and the main thing that completely shocked me was the shear amount of extreme construction going on in Shanghai! Every time I became fascinated by a near impossible building the next slide would uncover an even more extravagant one, some of true beauty! (true nerdy Civil Engineer coming out in me!). Shanghai alone seems to make all of the construction projects in the UK pale in comparison, not to even think about the whole of China. This was a great introduction to Shanghai and set expectations high as to what to expect when out and about!

We then moved on to a pretty rapid introduction to Chinese which was taught well even if in the Chinese repetitive fashion, which I found needs a fair amount of work outside of "class" to get it to stick in my brain but saying that it must be working as I am starting to pick up more and more! We also started our Calligraphy classes writing old style Chinese characters with brush and ink - Very soothing although none of mine will be going on my wall just yet .. Although there is a definite determination to make one good enough for that purpose in my time here!

After a very troublesome nights sleep (First experience of Jet Lag - Ahhh) we started on the first day of Trips. Visiting the Shanghai Museum, the Shanghai museum of Urban Planning, the Shanghai Tunnel Museum,  Yu Gardens & the market just outside. We also got our first glymps of the Pudong Skyline (including some of those amazing buildings from the presentations, & one of my favorite buildings, the Shanghai World Financial Center, fittingly surrounded by mist as if the skyline was just boasting about it's shear epic proportions). All of these were amazing places to visit showing off the ingenuity of the ancient Chinese and the never ending thirst for improvement of the modern Chinese city along with seeing the beauty of the gardens and bustle of the markets.

We also managed to make our own way to the Bund on the evening to see some of those massive buildings I have been mentioning and the Melting Pot of architecture that can be found in this area (Literally from all over the world!) which was a really interesting sight on an evening and a great opportunity to get a good few photo's!

All in all I have been enjoying China so much I haven't really managed to form proper opinions about it or put them into words as it stands but I am just enjoying keeping an open mind, observing and getting involved in what ever I can. This is how I plan to keep it and maybe by the end I will have a valid oppinion and some closing words to say! So until next time 再见 (Zàijiàn)!

Ready for the off!!! ... Almost

asiasat_600x405.jpg

Right well it's the night before flying to China and I'm almost ready. Small case of packing the old hand luggage and getting a few nicknacks together first thing and we are all done!

Flying from Heathrow at 2:15pm for a nice (seemingly) 24hour flight arriving in Shanghai at 3pm the next day. Hopefully we won't be effected by the "Super Typhoon" that's currently hitting Shanghai, but the organisers seemed pretty casual about it in their email of "SSS tips" so I think we will be OK!

More interesting posts to follow when I actually realise this trip is happening!

China Summer School Representing Cardiff University School of Engineering

I recently got asked by Cardiff University Engineering School to represent them at a summer school for a month in China. Myself and two 3rd year students from the school will be going to China in August to learn about some of the Chinese Engineering marvels, The Chinese Culture, Language and politics that make it such a unique country, with an undoubted massive influence on the future world.

We will be visiting Shanghai, Xi'an and Chongqing. Having lectures on the World Expo of Shanghai ran in 2010 on "Better City, Better Life" from the chief planner himself, Seeing the protection put in place to preserve some of their historic towns from flooding, seeing one of the massive Hi-Technology parks, Some of the new building in Qingpu and many visits and lectures to do with the sustainable development going on in the country amongst many others.

I am very honored to be given this amazing opportunity by Cardiff University who will be paying for my flights and insurance, while the China Engineering Education Excellence Alliance will be looking after us in China. I am also thank full to my Employer Laing O'Rourke for supporting me in this. Giving me the time off from my Summer Placement building a school in the Manchester area to go and gain this invaluable experience for myself and for the company as well!

There will be plenty of blog posts about my visit I am sure so check back to see how I've been getting on in August!

New EWB Cardiff Website

With a bit of productive procrastination from revision I've created a new website for EWB Cardiff!

We're going to keep it up to date with a record of all the events we do and all the upcoming events as well! Allot neater then the old website and hopefully with some better laid out information.

Take a peak, especially as we have a bit of literary genius telling us about the EWB CAT trip written by Stephen House, our poetry writing Communications officer!

Creating a direct link to a PDF stored in Google Docs

I use Google Docs to store allot of my files online, pretty much because I love Google, without their services like Google calender sending reminders to my phone I wouldn't turn up to half the things I'm meant to do! Plus they are cheap for storage space to back up all my photo's and documents for work etc.

Any ways recently I had a bit of trouble trying to create a direct link to a PDF I had uploaded to Google Docs and thought I would share how I finally managed to do it here!!

Some times a Direct link is better then the viewer one it gives you because Google viewer, although good, can mess up PDF's every now and then which was the case with the one I was trying to share.

After searching for a solution to get a direct link I couldn't find one that worked so I managed to do a bit of trickery and figure it out for myself. So heres me giving back and sharing my gained knowledge!

Events Prior to 30.04.2011

I've recently created a PDP (Professorial Development Planning) folder and one of the things I did for it was to think of and write about all the events I had attended relevant to Civil Engineering.

I wrote all of this up in to little articles and I thought I would share them here for any one who wants to view them!

First post

Hi There,

My name is Jon Parton and I'm a Student civil engineer being sponsored by Laing O'Rourke (Lucky me!!).

I'm setting up this blog just as somewhere I can write about some of the great things I have the privilege of experiencing, helping to organise or things I'm just generally fascinated by. Some where indeed to just send things out to the void via!

Talking of things I help to organise - Have a peak at that slideshow to the right of one of the great things we ran as EWB Cardiff (EWB Stands for Engineers Without Borders, if you've never heard of them take a wonder..EWB UK ) with the help of RedR. It was a course on Humanitarian aid, the realities of it and a bit of an explanation as to the complexities too! Was a brilliant hands on weekend with allot of good active stuff! Worth a butchers at the last day pictured in those photo's when we did a simulated scenario based on the Pakistan earthquake!

Right let's see how active I can be with this or if this will be the first of very few posts........ Wish me luck!

(oh yeah I get called Dolly due to the Parton thing.... )
